How Did The Rose?

As this is the first blog post, I think this poem by Hafiz and translated by Daniel Ladinsky is quite fitting.

How Did The Rose?

How
did the rose
ever open its heart
and give to this world all of its beauty?
It felt the encouragement of light against its being,
otherwise we all remain too
frightened.

This beautiful and petite poem extracts a sense of curiosity for development and being. What is it which sends a call giving us a desire, whether conscious or not, to open out into something new, Unknown? For Hafiz, perhaps this poem is literally about an opening of heart, a longing for an understanding of what it means to feel and show our most radiant beauty… To kiss the question of purpose and meaning with just a little more intensity.

For those aware of something deeper, the spirit perhaps, an opening may mean a beginning of trust for something which we never thought possible, or even something we never thought we wanted. Did the seed ever think it would come to blossom into a rose? It only follows its heart’s desire, where one thing leads to another. Perhaps running into a stone in the dirt may dampen the journey for now, but with the right determination and effort, a way around may be found. Such is practice for when some animal eats our first bud, a devastating blow to morale.

A hope for greater possibilities may lead to finding our rose, let the light guide all of us towards such beauty.
